The First Time

This is a new section that I created for Sarah McLachlan fans. Recently, I asked the Sarah fans in my Yahoo club the following question:
Where were you when you were first touched by Sarah's music?
"The first time I heard Sarah was when I bought the Surfacing CD. I was seeing a therapist for a disorder I have called DID. My therapist actually told me to go buy it. He said it was the most relaxing music he had ever heard. He was right. I bought the CD and played it in the car in the parking lot at Wal-mart. I love it. I listen to her all the time. It seems that some of the lyrics relate to exactly what I go through. Good times and bad. I now own all of her CD's. Some of her older ones were hard to find but I found them. My favorite song is "Good Enough". My three kids know every word to every one of her songs. I cannot wait to hear her new CD. Even one new song would satisfy some of my Sarah cravings! - Mary, USA"
"Well, being from canada, Sarah Mclachlan probably got a bit more air play back in the days of Vox. The first time I heard sarah was when I was about seven or eight, and I heard Vox for the first time. I loved the sounds in it. The melody is infectious. But the first time I fell in love with Sarah's music was when I heard Possession when I was ten. I was watching Much Music, and I just fell in love with Possession." - Melissa, YahooID: fumbling2solace
"I'll cast my mind back a year and a half ago, during which time I was on a plane to Malaysia, and unfortunately at the time, unknowingly had a distinct lack of Sarah-Enhancement to my days.
Anyway, to ensure this remains a *short*ish story, I'll get to the point. On that flight I just happened to have turned on one of the music stations on the headphones thingy, to hear a radio announcer say "... the hauntingly beautiful 'Angel'." Very shortly, I had found my all time favourite song, but hadn't caught the name of the artist.
Thankfully, this station was a 3 or so hour show which was continually repeating (every 3 hours, funnily enough). So in 3 hours, I had found out the name of the artist, and listened again to my favourite song another 3 times, loving it more and more each time I heard it." - Sven
"I was in chorus class and we had to sing Angel for our program. Usually i research the songs we sing for our programs but i didn't feel like it
anymore. Our teacher showed us Mirrorball and said that we should check it
out because he really was touched by Sarah's music. Well that was it, i
wanted to see for myself how cool this Sarah ladie was ... that was a over a
year ago and now i'm so inspired by her music. I've written 15 songs that
sound just like Sarah's ... i want to be a singer ... she's my hero, what can
i say ... Sarah Rules!!!!!!!" - Columbia02
"I was sitting in the bar in late 1997.
One cool song was playing. I doubted my ears.
I couldn't put up with asking what it was.
He showed me that CD.
It was a compilation album with "Hold on".
It surprised because it sounded so different
from Surfacing, which was the first released
album of Sarah in Korea. And he said, 'you can't
get this here. 'Cause I bought this in the USA'
But I finally got 'Hold On' last year. Today, I sold my TV & some stuff. One of great memories in Toronto could be
feeling closer to her music. Thanks guys, I love you." - CG, YahooID: almostcg
"I think that it was in front of my T.V. watching music videos on Much Music or while listening to the radio, but I know that it was a very nice summer day with my backyard door open. A nice cool breeze was blowing through the screen door - you know the one you hear bouncing off your wall and kinda circling the room and your body just kinda waits for it. Nostalgia is a funny thing, you THINK you remember things the way they happened, but I've realized it doesn't work out that way. So I was listening to this song and it was slowly growing on me...I only caught the last half. I never found out what it was for some reason because I had to go into the kitchen and fetch something near the end. Years later, Surfacing came out and I got into it after watching the video for Building A Mystery. I then downloaded some Sarah songs off the net and accidentally came across "I Will Remember You", the song from that summer day." - Grapes, YahooID: very_grapes
"Where was I when I first heard sarah's music?
Well I was at a school concert. Jackie, a girl in year 12 performed 'Possession'. I thought, wow! U know, that's a great song! I thought I'd heard it before, but i wasn't sure who it was by. Then a few months later, Jackie performed it again, and she also performed Angel.
So after the show I went up to her and said, 'Who sings those songs? I love them!' And she told me it was Sarah. I thought that hardly anyone knew about her. Then I heard on Felicity, how on the show, she always listens to Sarah Mclachlan. Now more and more people are talking about her! Sarah's music, to me is really inspirational, and yeah I love it!
Cheers, Loz (from aus!)" - YahooID: shopgirl26_152
"I was witnessing the making of the Adia music video when I first heard Sarah's music. Even though I saw Sarah in person, I didn't know who she was back then in January 1998. As I kept listening to Adia over and over again, the song captivated me. The rest is history." - Yahoo ID: lhm7
"I just thought I'd reply since I had been enjoying everyone else's stories about their first encounters with Sarah's music. My story is somewhat typical: I bought a random sountrack (Bed of Roses soundtrack I think), stumbled upon "Ice Cream" and I think I played it for 48 continuous hours. I had a friend who was a fan of Sarah at the time make me a compilation tape...and boom a fan is born. :o) I was really upset when Lilith Fair was put on hold the only year I would have had an opportunity to go. Yeah, I'm still in counseling for that one....haha not really. Sarah's music has gotten me through so many rough times and I will forever be endebted to her talent for touching lives." - YahooID: katynmae2
"I first heard of Sarah from a really good friend/crush of mine. She started talking about Lilith Fair and how it was going to be in Bonner Springs, KS, and that we should go. I started listening to Sarah after that, and the first album I bought was *The Freedom Sessions*. I have loved her ever since!" - YahooID: Absolut_Contagion
"I think the first time I heard Sarah was in the car. Thank god for living close to Canada, I heard 'Into the Fire' first - sometime after Solace but before Fumbling. I liked it but never knew who sang it. Then I heard Possession, again in the car, and immediately had to know who almost caused me to drive off the road. I have been hooked ever since." - YahooID: why_mee55
"I remember that I was at my friend's house, and she had a HUGE cd collection, and she pulled out Sarah's Fumbling album, and I was sitting at this desk and the speakers were right behind me, and when the organ started to play, faintly at first, and then growing louder, I was hooked. I sat there in silence and awe and listened to the whole song. When my friend returned to the room I grabbed her by the arm and demanded she tell me who that was..."Sarah McLachlan" she replied, "Isn't she great?" Hell yes." - YahooID: ecstacy_chick
"I was always aware of Sarah's radio hits (BAM, Adia, etc), but I didn't become a rabid Saraholic until November 1998. That was when I bought Fumbling Towards Ecstasy. I bought it for the only song I knew on the CD, POSSESSION. After hearing Possession, my CD player randomly went to ICE. That was all it took, my life was never to be the same after that! It's as if piano was dropped on me...I was completely overwhelmed. So, it was hearing ICE that actually did it for me. I even have that song on my answering machine :) - Andy, YahooID: admopar1
"It was late night, after t-day in 98. Mom went into the hospital with food poisoning(stupid turkey), dad and I were upstairs trying to get some sleep. The Tonite show w/Jay was on. I was scared about mom, and then Sarah started to perform Angel. I started to feel better and better, and felt safe that mom was in God's hands, and she wasn't going anywhere. I had bought Surfacing earlier that month, about the 11th, and had loved it! So i just listend to Angel over and over and over, and I felt better and better." - William, YahooID: arthurblacklab
"Arista Records 25th Anniversary Concert on TV. She sang "Angel" I recall." - koandkompany
"My best friend and I, and our boyfriends were cruising around Dallas one night in 1994. I was very uncomfortable in the back seat, scrunched in with my friend and 2 of my boyfriend's friends. All of a sudden, out of nowhere, I hear this amazing voice, and this song that just took my breath away. (No pun intended ;o)) The song was 'Possession' by Sarah. After that, well, the rest is history. I asked who that was, the guy told me, and I went out and bought her CD right away. Not many musical artists have had that kind of affect on me. There is really something special about Sarah's music. And that is also why the fans of her music can relate so well with each other. :o) We all feel that same magic." - Angela, YahooID: aphroditee24
Thanks to everyone that participated! It's always fun to learn more about other Sarah fans and how they became Sarah fans. :o) If you are reading this, and want to contribute your own answer to the question, please let me know and I will add your answer to this page as soon as possible. Thanks!
